SpareBank 1 Fraud: How to Report It and Stop the Money

If money left your SpareBank 1 account without your permission, or you paid a scammer, contact SpareBank 1 straight away and ask it to block the payment and your card. The first minutes matter most.

Do this first

  1. Call SpareBank 1’s official line below, or use help inside the official SpareBank 1 app. Never use a number from a text, a caller or a search result.
  2. Give them the transaction details (amount, time, and the account or number you paid) and ask them to block your card and stop or recall the payment.
  3. Change your online banking password and PIN if anyone may know them. SpareBank 1 will never ask for your PIN, password or a one-time code.
  4. Report it to the police too: see who handles cybercrime in Norway, and keep screenshots of every message and payment.

Know this about Norway

  • In Norway your own share of a fraud loss is capped at NOK 450 under Norwegian law, not the EUR 50 used in EU countries.
  • SpareBank 1 is a group of separate regional banks, each with its own number. Call the one for your bank, shown in your app or on your card.
  • We could not verify a phone number for DNB. Use the number on the back of your card or in the DNB app.

If SpareBank 1 won’t help

Finansklagenemnda (Norwegian Financial Services Complaints Board)

Out-of-court complaints from consumers about banks and other financial services, if your bank rejects your claim.

Complain to your bank first and wait until it has finished handling your case. Submit through the online form or by post (not by email); the case must not be in court, and the bank must be a member.

Your rights as a SpareBank 1 customer in Norway

  • Financial Contracts Act (finansavtaleloven) § 4-30: your share of the loss. Your bank is liable for losses from payments you did not authorise. If a lost or stolen card or other payment method was misused, your own share is at most NOK 450, and nothing if you could not have noticed the problem beforehand. You can be held liable for more only if you were grossly negligent (up to NOK 12,000 for electronic payment methods) or acted on purpose. Source
  • Financial Contracts Act (finansavtaleloven) § 4-32: refund deadline. If you dispute that you are liable, your bank must refund the amount and lost interest, minus your own share, immediately and no later than the end of the next business day. It may hold the refund only if it reasonably suspects fraud on your part and takes the case to court or a complaints body within four weeks of your written objection. Source
