Norway: How to Report Bank Fraud
If money left your account without your permission, or you were tricked into sending it, contact your bank or payment provider straight away. The faster they hear from you, the better the chance of stopping or recovering the money. Below are the official fraud and card lines for 4 providers in Norway.
Do this first
- Call your bank’s fraud or card line now. Use a number from this page, the back of your card, or your bank’s official app. Never use a number from a text, an email, a caller or a search ad.
- Block your card or freeze your account in the app if you can, and change your online banking password.
- Ask the bank for a reference number, and write down the time you reported it.
- Report it to the police as well: see who handles cybercrime in Norway.
- Keep everything: messages, call logs, screenshots and transaction IDs. Your bank will never ask for your PIN, password or a one-time code.
Know this about Norway
- In Norway your own share of a fraud loss is capped at NOK 450 under Norwegian law, not the EUR 50 used in EU countries.
- SpareBank 1 is a group of separate regional banks, each with its own number. Call the one for your bank, shown in your app or on your card.
- We could not verify a phone number for DNB. Use the number on the back of your card or in the DNB app.

- Financial Contracts Act (finansavtaleloven) § 4-30: your share of the loss. Your bank is liable for losses from payments you did not authorise. If a lost or stolen card or other payment method was misused, your own share is at most NOK 450, and nothing if you could not have noticed the problem beforehand. You can be held liable for more only if you were grossly negligent (up to NOK 12,000 for electronic payment methods) or acted on purpose. Source
- Financial Contracts Act (finansavtaleloven) § 4-32: refund deadline. If you dispute that you are liable, your bank must refund the amount and lost interest, minus your own share, immediately and no later than the end of the next business day. It may hold the refund only if it reasonably suspects fraud on your part and takes the case to court or a complaints body within four weeks of your written objection. Source
