United States: How to Report Bank Fraud

If money left your account without your permission, or you were tricked into sending it, contact your bank or payment provider straight away. The faster they hear from you, the better the chance of stopping or recovering the money. Below are the official fraud and card lines for 8 providers in United States.

Do this first

  1. Call your bank’s fraud or card line now. Use a number from this page, the back of your card, or your bank’s official app. Never use a number from a text, an email, a caller or a search ad.
  2. Block your card or freeze your account in the app if you can, and change your online banking password.
  3. Ask the bank for a reference number, and write down the time you reported it.
  4. Report it to the police as well: see who handles cybercrime in United States.
  5. Keep everything: messages, call logs, screenshots and transaction IDs. Your bank will never ask for your PIN, password or a one-time code.

Know this about United States

  • A phone call alone does not protect your legal rights on a credit card dispute: also send it in writing within 60 days of the statement.
  • Wells Fargo states that neither it nor Zelle offers purchase protection on Zelle payments, for example if an item you paid for never arrives.
  • Zelle has no fraud phone line. Report Zelle fraud to your own bank or credit union.

If your bank won’t help

FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

Report online scams and internet-enabled fraud to the FBI using 'File a Complaint'.

Scammers pretend to be the IC3. The real IC3 never contacts you to ask for information or money, and does not work with law firms or crypto services to recover funds.

Your rights

  • Regulation E: debit cards and electronic transfers. If you tell your bank within 2 business days of learning your card or access device was lost or stolen, your loss is capped at $50; after that, up to $500. If you do not report an unauthorised transfer within 60 days of the statement showing it, you can be liable for later transfers the bank shows would not have happened had you told it in time. Source
  • Regulation E: reporting errors and unauthorised transfers. Report the problem, by phone or in writing, within 60 days of the statement on which it first appears. The bank normally has 10 business days to investigate, or up to 45 days if it gives you a provisional credit in the meantime. Source
  • Regulation Z: unauthorised credit card use. You owe at most $50 for charges someone else made on your credit card before you reported it. State law or your card agreement may set a lower limit. Source
  • Regulation Z: credit card billing disputes. Dispute a charge in writing, sent to the billing-error address on your statement, within 60 days of the first statement showing it. The issuer must resolve it within 2 billing cycles (90 days at most), and you do not have to pay the disputed amount meanwhile. Source

Report it to the police too

Banks often ask for a police report before they investigate. Cybercrime agencies in United States lists who to report to, and our step-by-step guide covers the rest: How to Report Cybercrime in the United States (and Recover Your Money).

Every number on this page was read on the provider’s or regulator’s own website on 3 October 2026. Banks change numbers, so if one doesn’t work, use the number on your card or in the official app, and tell us so we can fix it. See every country in the Bank Fraud Help directory.
