Zelle Fraud: How to Report It and Stop the Money

If you sent money to a scammer through Zelle, or money left your Zelle account without your permission, contact Zelle straight away and ask them to block the receiving account. Wallet money moves fast, so the first minutes matter most.

Do this first

  1. Call Zelle’s official line below, or use help inside the official Zelle app. Never use a number from a text, a caller or a search result.
  2. Give them the transaction ID, the amount, the time and the number or account you paid, and ask them to block it.
  3. Change your PIN and password if anyone may know them. Zelle will never ask for your PIN or a one-time code.
  4. Report it to the police too: see who handles cybercrime in United States, and keep screenshots of every message and payment.

Know this about United States

  • A phone call alone does not protect your legal rights on a credit card dispute: also send it in writing within 60 days of the statement.
  • Wells Fargo states that neither it nor Zelle offers purchase protection on Zelle payments, for example if an item you paid for never arrives.
  • Zelle has no fraud phone line. Report Zelle fraud to your own bank or credit union.

If Zelle won’t help

FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)

Report online scams and internet-enabled fraud to the FBI using 'File a Complaint'.

Scammers pretend to be the IC3. The real IC3 never contacts you to ask for information or money, and does not work with law firms or crypto services to recover funds.
