USPS: Official Contacts and How to Report a Scam

Got a message or call about a USPS parcel, a redelivery fee or a customs charge? Here is what USPS officially publishes: its real contact numbers, the domains it uses, what it says it will never do, and where to report a scam.

Do this first

  1. Do not click the link or call the number in the message. Open the official USPS website or app yourself and enter the tracking number there.
  2. Check the sender against the official domains and phone numbers below. Anything else is not from USPS.
  3. If you already paid or typed in card details, call your bank's fraud line now.
  4. Report the message using the routes below, then tell the regulator if USPS won't help.

Official domains USPS lists: usps.com, uspis.gov. A link or email address on any other domain is not from USPS.

What USPS says about scams: USPS will not send texts or emails unless you first requested tracking for a specific package, and such a message will NOT contain a link; any 'delivery problem' text with a link you did not request is smishing. Related Postal Inspection pages: fake delivery-failure emails (uspis.gov/news/scam-article/fake-usps-emails) and fake phone calls (uspis.gov/news/scam-article/fake-usps-phone-calls), which says USPS does not call customers about package deliveries and never requests personal information for delivery verification.

Report a scam or fraud: Do not click the link. Copy the text body into a new email to [email protected], with your name and a screenshot showing the sender's phone number and the date sent; add whether you clicked, lost money or gave information. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) so the carrier can flag the sender number. Suspicious emails about package delivery failure: forward to [email protected], then delete. Fake phone call about a package: record the number on caller ID and call the Postal Inspection Service on 1-877-876-2455.

Forward scam messages to: [email protected]

File a USPS claim (insured mail, domestic): Sender or recipient can file an indemnity claim for insured mail that is lost, damaged or missing contents; original mailing receipt required. Damaged/missing contents: file no later than 60 days after mailing. Lost Priority Mail Express: file after 7 days, before 60 days; Priority Mail: after 15 days, before 60 days. USPS fee/postage refunds are separate (usps.com/help/refunds.htm). (source)

  • USPS says it does not charge for text tracking and its tracking texts never contain a link; a 'USPS' text with a link you did not request is a scam.
  • USPS does not call customers about package deliveries and never asks for personal information to verify a delivery.
  • USPS says scammers' texts ask for personal or financial information (usernames, passwords, SSN, card numbers, PINs).

If USPS won’t help:

US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS); FTC for non-USPS scams: FTC: reportfraud.ftc.gov/ ; FBI IC3: ic3.gov/complaint (both linked from the USPIS smishing page).
