British Airways: Official Contacts and How to Report a Scam
Fake airline support numbers on search ads and social media take real money. Here is what British Airways officially publishes: contact numbers, the domains it uses, its own scam warnings, refund rules and the regulator to complain to.
Do this first
- Do not call a number from a search ad, social post or message. Use the numbers below or the help section of the official British Airways app or website.
- No airline needs you to pay with gift cards, move money to a "safe" account or install remote-access software. If someone asks, hang up.
- If you paid by card or bank transfer, call your bank's fraud line now.
- Keep your booking reference and any messages, then report using the routes below.

What British Airways says about scams: BA says legitimate BA emails will not come from web-based mail such as gmail, hotmail or yahoo, and that it will never request payments through a third party (such as Western Union) or promise any kind of cash prize. The page lists examples of fraud it has seen: fake booking-confirmation emails from look-alike domains, WhatsApp messages offering thousands of free tickets, fake 'voucher / 2 free flights' emails, and WhatsApp/text messages asking you to pay to 'release' a valuable parcel supposedly held by British Airways World Cargo.
Report a scam or fraud: Forward suspicious emails that appear to be from British Airways to [email protected] (BA says it cannot reply to messages sent there). Do not click links or attachments.
BA delays, cancellations and refunds: If your flight is delayed more than 5 hours and you no longer wish to travel you may claim a refund; for cancelled flights you can request a refund or rebooking. Refund requests go through Manage My Booking; tickets bought through a travel agent should be refunded through that agent. BA states flights subject to US DOT rules receive a cash refund. (source)
- BA says it will never ask you to pay money through a third party.
- BA's published list of known scam emails is partly old (2016-2018 examples), so absence of a message from that list does not mean a message is genuine.
- Messages claiming a 'valuable parcel' is held by British Airways World Cargo and needs a payment to release are fraudulent.
If British Airways won’t help:
UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT) / approved ADR bodies: Complain to the airline in writing first. If unsatisfied you can refer the complaint to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) body, to the CAA's PACT if the airline has no ADR agreement (PACT cannot impose a decision), or take legal action.
