American Airlines: Official Contacts and How to Report a Scam
Fake airline support numbers on search ads and social media take real money. Here is what American Airlines officially publishes: contact numbers, the domains it uses, its own scam warnings, refund rules and the regulator to complain to.
Do this first
- Do not call a number from a search ad, social post or message. Use the numbers below or the help section of the official American Airlines app or website.
- No airline needs you to pay with gift cards, move money to a "safe" account or install remote-access software. If someone asks, hang up.
- If you paid by card or bank transfer, call your bank's fraud line now.
- Keep your booking reference and any messages, then report using the routes below.

Official domains American Airlines lists: aa.com. A link or email address on any other domain is not from American Airlines.
What American Airlines says about scams: American says it will never ask you to make security-related changes, or collect personal or financial information, in unsolicited emails, phone calls, postal mailings or faxes; any attempt to do so should be treated as fraudulent. Warning signs it lists: a false claim about your account or flights, links to look-alike sites, attachments, company logos, false urgency, typos, a sender address that does not match, generic greetings like 'Dear Customer'. It also warns of social media scams promising free tickets, miles or gift cards.
Report a scam or fraud: Do not click links, open attachments, call numbers in the message or follow its instructions. Email a copy of the suspicious message to [email protected]. For scam mail received by post, photograph the mailing and envelope and email it to the same address, and file a mail fraud complaint with the US Postal Service (ehome.uspis.gov/fcsexternal/default.aspx). Website/app vulnerabilities go to a HackerOne submission form linked on the page.
US DOT refund rules (apply to all US-market airlines): Passengers are entitled to a refund if the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and they choose not to travel or accept credits. Tickets bought 7+ days before departure can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours. Credit card refunds are due within 7 business days, other payment methods within 20 calendar days. (source)
AA receipts and refunds support: AA hosts a receipts and refunds support page with links for ticket/fee receipts (available 24 hours after purchase, kept up to 18 months) and refund requests. (source)
- AA says it never asks for personal or financial information in unsolicited emails or phone calls.
- If a message has a link or phone number in it, do not use it; go to aa.com directly or use the number on aa.com.
- FTC (July 2024) warns scammers pose as airline customer service reps on social media; contact the airline only through its official app, website, chat or phone number: consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2024/07/scammers-impersonate-airline-customer-service-representatives
If American Airlines won’t help:
US Department of Transportation, Office of Aviation Consumer Protection: DOT says to complain to the airline first (airlines must acknowledge within 30 days and answer in writing within 60 days), then file a complaint with DOT online or by mail to Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington DC 20590.
