The official alert, headlined "¡ATENCIÓN VECINO, VECINA!", is going viral across WhatsApp groups and social media, and for good reason. Scammers are impersonating officials from CDMX social programs to steal your digital identity in under 30 seconds.

How The Scam Works

According to the alert from Ciudad de México - Capital de la Transformación, the modus operandi is simple and terrifyingly effective:

1. You receive a phone call. The person on the other end claims to be calling on behalf of a Government of Mexico City program.
2. To "verify your identity" or "activate your benefit," they tell you they will send you a code to your phone.
3. You receive a real SMS or WhatsApp code - but it's actually YOUR verification code for WhatsApp, your email, or your bank.
4. They ask you to read it back to them.

The moment you share it, the poster warns: "NO LO COMPARTAS."

Once they have the code, they can take control of your WhatsApp account, clone it to another device, and then scam your entire family and contacts asking for money, or access your personal data.

1. NUNCA COMPARTAS: Never share verification codes, passwords, or personal data by call or message. No legitimate government program will ever ask for them.
