How Police Request Data from Tumblr
Police and government officials send lawful requests to Tumblr through its law-enforcement portal or its legal-process email. The details below are taken from Tumblr's own published guidelines.

What Tumblr says about legal process
- Legal process. Basic subscriber records require a valid US subpoena; additional IP data and stored account contents require a court order or search warrant; non-public information is disclosed only on valid US process or in an emergency under 18 U.S.C. 2702.
- Requests from other countries. Foreign agencies must use US channels such as letters rogatory or MLAT; Tumblr may preserve but will not disclose without US process.
- Preservation. US agencies: records preserved for 180 days, extendable on request. Non-US agencies: preservation requires intent to pursue MLAT or another US mechanism and lapses if no MLAT documentation arrives within 90 days.
- Notifying the user. Tumblr notifies users where legally permitted unless a US court issues a nondisclosure order; confidential preservation is honoured for 45 days.
