How Police Request Data from Shopify
Police and government officials send lawful requests to Shopify through its law-enforcement portal. The details below are taken from Shopify's own published guidelines.
Ministry of Cyber Affairs is not Shopify and cannot create or reset portal accounts, pass on requests or release data. Contact Shopify directly. Is this your company? Request a correction.
Where to send the request
| Portal | help.shopify.com Third parties (including law enforcement) seeking information held by Shopify under legal process; requires creating a Shopify account and verifying an email address (this does not sign you up for a store) |
|---|---|
| Legal entity | The Shopify entity that contracts with the merchant or partner (see Shopify's Contracting Party Chart) |
| Official guidelines | shopify.com |
| Transparency report | shopify.com |
What Shopify says about legal process
- Legal process. Requests must go through the online form and be supported by a subpoena, court order or other document that legally requires a response; for merchant customer data Shopify will generally direct the requester to the merchant first.
- Requests from other countries. No dedicated non-US section; the entity to address depends on the merchant or partner per the Contracting Party Chart at https://www.shopify.com/legal/country-list.
- Preservation. Store data is kept for the store's lifetime; personal information is purged within 90 days of deactivation and other identifying information about 2 years after inactivity; send a preservation order with a discrete list of data (Shopify cannot archive a whole store).
- Notifying the user. Shopify will notify affected individuals and entities before producing information unless a statute, regulation or court order legally prohibits it.
