How Police Request Data from Quora

Check before you send

  • [email protected] is for requests from outside the US and courtesy copies of US ones. The guidelines article is about four years old.

Emergency requests

Quora may disclose user information to law enforcement in rare circumstances where it believes an emergency involving danger of death or serious physical injury exists; no dedicated emergency channel is published.

What Quora says about legal process

  • Legal process. In the US, data about a particular user (name, email, IP address) requires a validly issued subpoena or court order; private communications between users or non-public posts require a US court warrant. Quora only considers requests from government entities under applicable law and legal process. Anonymous content is not linked to accounts.
  • Requests from other countries. Foreign law enforcement must follow the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty under applicable circumstances; foreign requests can be sent to [email protected] and must originate from the requesting agency's official government/law-enforcement email address.
  • Notifying the user. Quora will endeavor to email the affected user about a request, generally 14 days before production, unless prohibited by law (valid non-disclosure order) or in an emergency (danger of death or serious physical injury).
