How Police Request Data from MEGA

Police and government officials send lawful requests to MEGA through a legal-process email address. The details below are taken from MEGA's own published guidelines.

Ministry of Cyber Affairs is not MEGA and cannot create or reset portal accounts, pass on requests or release data. Contact MEGA directly. Is this your company? Request a correction.

Emergency requests

MEGA accepts an "Emergency Response" request where a senior law enforcement officer (or authority acceptable to MEGA) judges disclosure necessary to protect vital interests of a person or a public-interest task under GDPR Art. 6(1)(d)/(e) and there is no time to obtain a court order; MEGA may accept in good faith at its discretion. Contact: No separate channel stated; use [email protected]. The takedown guidance advises requesters to check with MEGA first.

What MEGA says about legal process

  • Legal process. MEGA generally provides user data only when required by applicable law or by a court or law enforcement authority with appropriate jurisdiction (Hungarian law now; New Zealand law for MEGA VPN/Pass NZ entity), except emergencies and CSAM/terrorism investigations. Files and chats are user-encrypted so MEGA can generally supply only registration information and IP addresses (basic subscriber information). Requesters should contact MEGA first to see what information is available.
  • Requests from other countries. Since May 2025 MEGA operates from Hungary (MEGA Privacy LLC): subpoenas or search warrants from non-EU countries are not directly enforceable and must come through MLAT channels; EU member-state requests may go via intra-EU frameworks such as the European Investigation Order. MEGA says it is not subject to foreign domestic court orders but may supply metadata without a warrant in cases of serious criminality including child sexual exploitation.
  • Preservation. Takedown Guidance Policy says MEGA may, where there is particular urgency, retain information while disabling user access to it for evidential purposes (discretionary, no formal preservation process). Transparency report: after account closure, data is kept as long as law enforcement requests are pending, otherwise 12 months.
  • Notifying the user. MEGA will promptly inform the user where it is required by law to do so, and in other situations where practicable, unless legally restrained or the law enforcement agency requests non-disclosure for an active investigation.
