How Police Request Data from Google Pay (India)

Emergency requests

Google may provide information to a government agency where it reasonably believes it can prevent someone dying or suffering serious physical harm (for example bomb threats, school shootings, kidnappings, suicide prevention, missing persons), still considered under applicable laws and Google's policies.

What Google Pay (India) says about legal process

  • Legal process. For Google LLC the policy lists the US minimums: a subpoena for basic subscriber registration information and certain IP addresses, a court order for non-content records in criminal cases, and a search warrant for content of communications. For authorities outside the US, Google LLC may provide data only if consistent with US law, the law of the requesting country (same due process as for a local provider), Global Network Initiative norms and Google's policies. The policy page does not mention Google Pay or India specifically.
  • Requests from other countries. Google LLC says it sometimes receives requests from authorities outside the US and may provide user information if consistent with US law (such as ECPA), the requesting country's law (same due process as for a local provider), international norms (GNI Principles) and Google's policies. Google's Transparency Report FAQ says verified government agencies submit requests through an online system (LERS). No India-specific or Google Pay-specific procedure is stated, and no page says how Google India Digital Services Private Limited handles requests.
  • Notifying the user. Google emails the user account before disclosing information in response to a government request (the account administrator for managed accounts), unless legally prohibited; it may skip notice for disabled or hijacked accounts and in emergencies, giving notice later if the emergency has passed.
